The Devil's Tower

The Geological Wonders of Devil's Tower: A Real-Life Version of Native American Folklore     Devil’s Tower and Other Strange Structures: How did it Come to Be? Located in the central region of Wyoming in the north eastern part of the country the Devil’s Tower is one of the country’s most beautiful natural landmarks with immense historical and geologic appeal. This remarkable structure has become famous as Bear Lodge according to the traditions of Indigenous peoples of the Americas and has become a symbol of mystery and grandiose for the tourists. Devil’s Tower is believed to have been created, by a story of young girls who ran to escape a group of bear attackers. When the girls attempted to leave the cave, they climbed on a rock and as they sought the help of the Great Spirit the rock lifted the girls out of reach and left the bears helpless below. It is believed that this produced what is now known as Devil’s Tower, one of the most outstanding geological featur...

The San Andreas Fault - Transform plate boundry

Image
The Fascinating San Andreas Fault: The California Tectonic Boundary: A Work in Progress     The Overall Gem of the San Andreas Fault Running for well over 1000 miles through the state of California, the San Andreas Fault is a true wonder that still elicits interest to this day. This transform fault has been created millions of years ago and delineates the convergence between the North American and Pacific plates; the geographical region is evidently geologically active all the time. San Andreas fault was first discovered in 1895 by scientist HL Hausen, though he did not name them as a fault but his observation of large movement of the earth’s surface horizontally showed him the existence of the fault. It marked the beginning of a breakthrough that enabled us to study the fault and consequently the area with a new perspective. The plates, in touch with each other and the earth’s surface, keep moving forward relentlessly. Specifically, the San Andreas Fault is a...

The idea of the continental drift: strengths and weaknesses

Image
An enlightening passage of discovery of the Dynamic Earth A Look at Continental Drift Theory and Its Flaws Hypothesis about continental drift put forward by the distinguished scholar Alfred Wegener was the memorable concept that declared the immovable character of the Earth’s continents. According to Wegener’s theory there was movement in the later of the continents and therefore the formation of some and the breaking up of others. Nonetheless, Wegener’s theory came under criticism compelling the scientific community to look for the mechanism driving this movement. The scientific community of that time could not comprehend the forces that can lead to such gigantic movements of the earth’s surface and due to this reason, a shift in the benchmark was not acknowledged.   The Birth of Plate Tectonics The rejection of Wegener's continental drift theory paved the way for the development of a more comprehensive and scientifically sound concept: It depends on the b...

The Black Smokers

Image
Discovering Black Smokers Unknown of the Ocean Base The Enigmatic Black Smokers Do you ever consider those black enormous chimneys which release the dark clouds of smoke from the bottom of the sea? These fascinating structures which are also referred to as black smokers are quite wonders of the underwater geophysical geography and are home to a myriad of young research interests and biological importance. Hydrothermal vents and black smokers Black smokers are a sort of hydrothermal vent that exists on the boundaries of tectonic plates and the areas of volcanic activities. These vents are formed through the hot water that is procured through cracks in the floor of the sea, by the under ground geological heat. The water is progressively heated and turns into steam, which goes up along with various dissolved minerals and materials from the Earth’s crust. When this superheated, mineral-laden water is expelled from the seafloor, it mixes with the colder seawater which makes the dissol...
